Word on the street from a bunch of folks who seem to know a whole lot about it is that wine has been around since about 6,000 BC.

That's 8,000 years to you and me. You know what else was going on then? The Mehrgarh culture more or less reached its height. Equids disappeared from the Americas. The Holocene Climate Optimum was still kicking.

OK. Truthfully, we really couldn't care much less about that other stuff. But, man, that wine…

Humans have been studying, refining, improving and generally putting their big brains to a lot of use working on wine. And along the way we've discovered intricacies beyond measure. Keep checking back here for some of them. We'll drop more and more of what's in our—and some of our friends'—big brains about wine and food and enjoyment and just why, for instance, a glass of Manifesto! Sauvignon Blanc, a plate of oysters, a wet surfboard and a Costa Rican sunset blend perfectly into one of those moments that make you stare off wistfully every single time you remember it.

After all, this page is called culinary, not buy a case and invite your favorite ne'er-do-wells over to polish it off. Actually, now that we think about it, maybe those things aren't mutually exclusive…
